The Brief:
The Trust approached us with a need to engage with Black, Asian and racially minoritised nurses, as the Trust had picked up feedback from this group that there was inequality in development and promotional opportunities.
This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of Black, Asian and racially minoritised nurses and midwives working within Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. Centring their voices and experiences of navigating organisational culture, and of professional progression opportunities. It aimed to gain insights not only into their personal experiences but also their expectations of Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust to ensure that professional development opportunities and the working culture of the Trust promotes equity of access to all nurses and midwives.

Focus groups
Outcome:
We delivered four focus groups to Black, Asian and racially minoritised nurses, one of which was held in the evening to accommodate work shifts. The session question set was written specifically to address the participants' views. A staff engagement survey was also circulated to capture as many views as possible from stakeholders unable to attend.
A full report was submitted on completion of the focus groups, which used the sessions to explore and provide recommendations regarding:
· Motivations for entering the nursing profession and career plans
· Mentoring and role models
· Development programmes and promotion
· Organisational culture
