University of Liverpool

The Brief:

The university approached Diverse Matters in Summer 2022 with a specification for focus groups and a subsequent report for both staff and students.  This was to support their application for the Race Equality Charter Award. The University wanted to seek feedback to ensure that their policy, practice and support was inclusive and equitable to its Black and racialised staff and students.  They particularly wanted to:

  • Discover more about the challenges Black and other ethnically diverse students face which impacts on their desire to stay with the University. To understand the experience of equal/non equitable treatment.
  • Address the wider issues of reporting racial discrimination, the process of education e.g. accessing academic support, course engagement; and career progression.
  • To understand the ways in which racial diversity impacts upon the student or staff sense of belonging

Services:

Focus groups

Outcome:

Diverse Matters delivered 8 focus groups (4 each for staff and students) from Autumn 2022 onwards, submitting a final report on completion which enabled the University to enhance its support and practice.

Client feedback:

“Massive thank you to Adam, Denise, and Holly alongside Barbara and the colleagues who delivered the sessions; all my questions were answered very quickly, and it was a pleasure to work with you!”
