Action for Children

Action for Children help disadvantaged children across the UK. They help children through fostering or adoption – and by intervening early to stop neglect and abuse. In addition to making life better for children with disabilities.

ACT had a clear Equality scheme in place and are committed to promoting equality, valuing diversity and working inclusively across our entire organisation.   To support Diversity and Inclusion activities, ACT have a CelebrateLGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) network in place.  The network had carried out some activities to support LGBT+ children/young people and teams but wanted advice and guidance in how they can raise the profile of the network, engage and increase membership, gain leadership buy in and enhance LGBT+ equality within the organisation.

Diverse Matters providing advice and guidance and next steps for ACT to support them in their journey in embedding LGBT+ equality and ensuring the CelebrateLGBT+ network could reach its potential.

We have also continued to support the organisation with policy reviews and delivering Diversity and Inclusion training to teams.  This has included race inclusion training, Embedding Diversity and Inclusion training, reviewing policies to equality impact assess and ensure they are anti-racist. In addition to a Diversity and Inclusion audit and delivery of focus groups to hear lived experiences of their Black, Asian and Racially minoritised staff.

Other work has included reviewing their recruitment processes and carrying out an audit within their fundraising and communications department.  The outcome that the department enhanced its practices so it more effectively supported their teams and engaged more inclusively in their functional practice.

Feedback from Locks Farmer - Director of Fundraising and Communications

We worked with Diverse Matters to conduct an audit/equality analysis of our systems, processes and ways of working. We are delighted with the extensive research they undertook from surveys and interviews to workshops with team members with lived experience. This led to the delivery of an in depth report that has helped to shape our organisation’s anti-racism plan. We are now well into the delivery of this plan and looking forward to working again with Diverse Matters to under take a review of our progress.

Working with Diverse Matters has been extremely valuable and critical in guiding us and helping to build momentum internally. Thank you
