Job applicants over 55 seen as less desirable hires, poll finds

Ageist attitudes are causing people in their mid-50s to be treated less favourably in the jobs market, according to findings from the Centre for Ageing Better.

The average age someone becomes undesirable to recruiters is 55, the poll of 4,000 UK adults found.

Gender pay gap ‘will not close until 2056’

This means that an average female employee effectively works for 47 days of the year “for free”, according to the TUC. It found that pay disparities were highest in the finance and insurance industry, at 27.2%. In the leisure service sector it was 1.5%.

How can businesses support care leavers into work?

According to the Department for Education, in 2023/24 there were 50,670 care leavers in England between the age of 17 to 21, and 65% of this group were male. In October 2018, the government launched the Care Leaver Covenant, which allows public, private and voluntary sector organisations to pledge support to help care leavers into employment.
