Alex Hawkey is an EDI consultant and trainer with 20 years experience working in EDI-related fields, primarily around disability and health, in both small local organisations and large national charities. His professional experience in disability equality mirrors his lived experience as an neurodivergent person living with diabetes.
With an MSc in Media Psychology, Alex is particularly interested in how our interactions with the media (including social media) influence our beliefs and behaviours. He believes this is crucial within EDI work. A screenwriter in his spare time, having worked on Aardman’s Shaun the Sheep, his Masters dissertation studied the reactions of children aged 6-7 to a same-sex wedding as depicted in an animated children’s show.
Alex’s training experience includes developing and delivering courses about Reasonable Adjustments in the Workplace, Disability Equality in the Media Industries and as an Expert Patients Programme tutor. He is also a Mental Health First Aider, an Investigations Manager for internal staff disputes and has a background reviewing HR policies and procedures for inclusive best practice.
Alex is committed to continuously improving his EDI competency, particularly within areas that do not match his lived experience, including anti-racism, gender equality and issues related to intersectionality.
